About the recent collapse of the home of the gladiators in Pompeii, I can think of a recent trip to Castel del Monte.
A warm Sunday in October we start from the time of Monopoly octagonal castle. Dreamed of visiting for years and finally, after about an hour's drive, I see it soar up the hill, an imposing and mysterious. I'm happy as a doll to be finally on the slopes of the famous hill. But the happiness is the time to realize that just to park your car in the parking lot and take the bus that takes us right up to the castle (about km of road), we have to pay 4 € per person, although the bus does not we wanted to take it. In short, 4 € I certainly do not prevent them from knowing one of the most beautiful and famous mansions of Frederick II. We arrive, the crowd crushed Roman bus, all the way up. After some usual photos we enter the castle. We had already informed the price of tickets on the Internet and other shelled out € 6 per person just to enter. There is an exhibition, which snubbed the stolen kisses at the time of Frederick II, because we are here for the Castle, then we join a group of visitors following a guide, a beautiful girl very prepared. The girl we note, crashes and warns, "if you will, you are free to join the group, but at the end of the visit should leave a voluntary contribution." Me and my man we are launching a quick look and annuiamo silent. The guide will show rooms, details and secrets of a beautiful castle and we dive for a while 'in the thirteenth century, imagining that we, too courtiers in the service of Frederick. The visit ends and we leave 4 € a "tip" to the girl. We continue to wander around thinking about how much we spent in just three quarters of an hour. Parking: € 4, entry: 6 € per person, guided tours: € 4 others. Guided tour € 4? But then in the business of (less than 6 €) what the hell was included? We find the girl-guide and ask him. "In the hall is out of nothing - he explains - you pay only the entrance, which usually costs € 3, but since there is an exhibition, is twice as expensive." "Sorry - we reply - but we were convinced to pay, with the entry, even driving. Apparently not so. " "No, in fact - she adds - we are the local tourist guides and tips on earning only visitors, where we actually take only a part because the rest we give to the association."
Well, the picture is clear. We spent around 20 euro to stay under an hour to visit a castle. Of these 20 € less than 12 went to Superintendence for the architectural and landscape of the provinces of Bari, Barletta-Andria-Trani and Foggia , who runs the Castle of fact, 4 who manages the parking and bus service and perhaps a euro to the girl who was hoarse (and mitered all day) to guide us in the Castle. But the Superintendent, we wonder, what does it do with those 6 € each, which multiplied by the large number of visitors (there are no facilities for touring club members and even for students), is an impressive figure? It could not, the Superintendent, provide to create a group of regular paid staff and guides, instead of taking the members of the Pro Loco?
Should cultural property of great value in Italy has been run so badly, how can we expect our children and grandchildren may benefit from it? With monuments, will also destroy our national identity and regional levels and the decay will be irreversible. And to think that Italy is the country tops the list of countries with the greatest number of cultural goods, but apparently lacks a culture of total assets.
