Italian evening (although U.S. as a distinguished guest Chris Speed) Concentus Musicus to, with one of the most popular of the national scene: El Gallo Rojo. The formation, indeed, is the "All Star" homonymous collective of musicians, that - a label that once again shares its name - has already produced many interesting works for different configurations. This group, in practice, to complete a double quartet that was required to appear as a "guest" of Speed, was born to represent the collective in an organic way, but has since become a wonderful reality that is currently engaging the musicians in an increasingly more intense. The reasons become obvious listening to the concert. First, the (many) pieces of the repertoire are each the result of the proposed composition of the different components work plan. The fact that, despite the many hands, the whole of the concert has shown great consistency in style, shown on the one hand, no doubt feeling among the musicians, the other a work of adaptation that is behind us. The latter is another reason that explains the growing importance of the group members for the same: how to stay on stage the musicians revealed itself in fact as they taste test for this powerful music and articulate, now explosive, now reflective. The basic structure of the proposed El Gallo Rojo, as emerged on the stage of Sala Vanni (maybe not the best possible for such a group, for its rumble, and the lack of amplification, and yet it has not penalized much sign of a remarkable balance between the parties), sees the centrality of a strong rhythm - the two basses, Danilo Gallo and Stefano Senni, and the two batteries, Zeno De Rossi and Massimiliano Sorrento - with the help of guitar and keyboards and electronics Terragnoli Enrico Alfonso Santimone. The tissue processed by this organization, involved the two reeds - mostly tenor saxophone, clarinet on some tracks - Francesco Bigoni and Chris Speed. But that is part of the original and, so to speak, "transverse" in this structure is that the three pairs tools work much like each other, almost as if each were a single instrument, but much more flexible and sophisticated. In this way, are rare moments in which a single instrument takes the solo, most of which is taken by the couple together, without which it is conducted in unison, but let each of the instruments of the couple speaks in its own way though side by side. Posted in music often to advancing progressive waves, driven in turn by the two basses or two batteries and two saxophones which are free to make a sort of wind surfing in full, the artificial use of the instruments coupled showed considerable effectiveness and originality. All the more so that each pair appeared inside the marked differences in style and expression, especially evident in the two batteries - the most aggressive and rhythmic Sorentino traditionally more delicate, attentive to fall off, almost melodic De Rossi - and two saxophones - and given all rounder 'expression on the treble Bigoni, more rugged and "dark" Speed. A concert so successful and interesting, emblematic sign of the liveliness of the experimental scene of our country.

press_todo chueco

Budd Kopman ___all about jazz USA

Bassist Danilo Gallo is the leader of Gallo & The Roosters, whose wackily wonderful Todo Chueco literally translates into English as "all (or completely) crooked, curved or bowlegged." However, chueco is also English slang for "stupid" or "retarded," which might more closely reflect the attitude of Gallo and the band. Although Gallo and most of the Roosters hail from Italy, there is a distinct English undertone to the many of the tracks. The music presented is unpredictable, irreverent and tongue-in-cheek enough to make one laugh out loud. However, layered over and under this riot is a stream of very tight and knowing music. Gallo and his gang know what they do, and expertly balance between these two worlds--they are having some serious fun. How could someone who thanks singer Captain Beefheart, reed players Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy and painter Salvadore Dali not have fun? The Roosters are a quartet consisting of Gallo, reed player Achille Succi (here mostly on bass clarinet), trombonist Gerhard Gschlossl and drummer Zeno De Rossi, with a few friends sprinkled here are there over the tracks.
Of the nine tracks, Gallo wrote six, with two pieces by Eric Satie and one by Tom Waits, and arranged everything. As the bottom of the band, Gallo sets the mood through his rhythmic pulse, as well as the boundaries of the harmonic territory. A powerful player, he continually pushes the band forward, directing the action. Succi is as free as a bird, and fits easily into any situation ranging from plaintive beauty to organized chaos, while Gschlossl slips, slides, sings and blurts as required. De Rossi, who can get very busy, is nevertheless always light and precise, playing counterpoint to the deep bass.
"Lullaby of Rattlesnakes" just about sums up the band, as the slinky, slithering line is laid down by the bass and trombone. Succi enters later, adding some harmony, along with a very eerie Fender Rhodes sound from Giorgio Pacorig. De Rossi crashes away as Daniele D'Agaro eventually breaks out on tenor saxophone in the final section, which is wild and slippery. The way the two Satie pieces are treated speaks volumes. "Pieces Froides No. 1" is played quite straightly, with delicate drums and bass accompanying the melodic sounds of Gschlossl and Succi--one can almost hear its French origins. However, "Pieces Froides No. 2" is given a real ride as reverence gives way to French breakdancing more than once. If Todo Chueco is any indication, Gallo & The Roosters would be a total hoot live, bringing everyone to their knees in laughter and appreciation as they create their deep musical fun house. have not lived up to expectations even "Gallo and the Gauls," an exhibition of players furious and overwhelming, with feet firmly planted in the American free, eyes fixed on the downtown New York scene (Zorn, Ned Rothenberg, Dave Douglas) and heart kidnapped by South American folk influences (or Centropadane?). Leading the attack we thought the powerful bass and humoral Danilo Gallo, indefatigable weaver of rhythmic dance grooves and irresistible. Behind him, the drumming of Zeno De Rossi beautifully effective, extremely versatile and chameleon drummer (Joey Baron the reference model, the spiritual father of Shelly Manne), with a sense of proportion very rare, almost total control of your kit and an amazing capacity to serve the music. The front line has seen the usual masterful performance by Achille Succi, now an undisputed master of Clarone and contralto, and the surprise Gerhard Gschloessl, trombonist school Teutonic (Albert Mangelsdorff in the heart), the full-bodied sound and precise without ever losing acrobatic lucidity.

___debaser _italy Travel notebook, poster monochromatic philosophy of the author, this work of Danilo Gallo can be considered his "Tjiuana moods," but, unlike that of Mingus Thanks to the bathroom in the regenerator vice city brothel, the place of initiation of every American, risorgette galvanized and viable and able to produce a work full of new life, in his "Gallo & The Roosters" is the bassist and composer Foggia Mexico confirms its moods, essentially tragic. A circus catwalk skeletons in sombreros, the task of fate and inevitability of death, and nothing but the articulation of sadness and in various facets, sometimes even funny, even if through gritted teeth. But this CD is the multiplication of the sound of his instrument; bassist derived hadeniana, Gallo is in love with the sounds of his passive bass. You will hear a continual popping like a whip in the tracks, the note is indefinite and stands alone the harmony of the strings. Bowel sound, color chocolate burned. Gallo, said, stretching his stamp on a team quite unusual, featuring bass clarinet Achille Succi (formerly of the band of Vinicio Capossela) Gherhard Gschlossl on trombone, and the exposure Zeno De Rossi (current drummer Capossela) drums. How can guess the overall tone is dark, verging on dull though with flashes, and already the intro of the song "Kabu-l", which opens the selection, set the war plan, with the trombone duet with a bow Gschloss mangy leader. After a few seconds the group on a compact and beat the track, the track continues between the blows of the dishes of De Rossi and the screech of woody clarinet Succi. A clear and simple that gets lost and finds himself on the street. Basically we are traveling in a strange land and the many uncertainties. "Pieces froides No. 1 (Erik Satie) is an excuse to sketch a portrait in the figurative style of the same author to the discovery of new lands. First tentative, hesitant steps. Passion for an artist as affinity. As if to say: "Actually I wrote it." La rumba "El Gallo Sanchez" is a tender tale of the streets in Mexico, a dessert party is ending and people picks up the last crumbs of pleasure. It appears the first guest on the disc, the guitar of Henry Terragnoli treacherous, crooked Mexcal of Oaxaca between the late drummer of firecrackers. "Lullaby of the rattlesnakes 'struts malcerta in heavy and dangerous and unknown land, with the Rhodes Giorgio Pacorig, organ left by horror series out until it meets the 9 / 8 and the mandatory sax Daniel D' Agaro. "Mysticism nucléaire" sees a summit of reeds, three alto sax, Nicola Fazzini, Achille Succi and the shrill cry of the promising Dolph Piero Bittolo Bon. We are in an Armageddon orchestrated by military drummers De Rossi. For those who wrote the song more 'beautiful collection, all closed in its relentlessness with no solution.
Tom Waits, one of the favorite musicians by Danilo Gallo, is honored in the cover of his early "Alice" was revisited as an elegy to Terragnoli open funeral and the growl of the trombone Gschloss to mimic the voice of crooner pstmoderno.
The bass opens the second review of "Pieces froides" by Satie, after the leader of the stealth cover turns into a chase of horns on a sick twist odd. "Bugsy Siegel", story of the exploits of the jew mafia was out of Lucky Luciano would be a nice theme, including the best written by Gallo: I say that is because this arrangement, although very well performed, he knows too much about "Masada." Another country, another climate, "Udine". The sad return home (in the province of Udine, Cavalicco, there are studies where it was recorded this CD), the author sums up the magnificence Mexicans to discover that in the end, only the ash remains of bonfires. The trend is that of the blues, inevitably, to a sudden lyricism of Ellington mold. Traces of joy, withheld almost winning the final rush.

Altrisuoni _italy The "red rooster" Danilo Gallo, Zeno De Rossi, Achille Succi and friends will talk about them in the coming years. The music of El Gallo Rojo - label, but also group Danilo Gallo and modus suonandi et ars interpretandi - is jazz that emanates an energy and freshness unique. His philosophy is perfectly framed by a "No tenemos que pedir permiso para ser libres," motto of the label and yet always music or thoughtful, composed, free. Fluid flows like red, fiery and hot, one of the most recent releases of the group, Todo Chueca. Nine pieces ranging from "Kabu-l" (1) to "Udine" (9) in a figurative sense, but also geographically, through a boreal Erik Satie, in His two "Pièces froides" and a visionary Tom Waits, in his "Alice". A journey that lies ahead sidereal metaphysical but also physical truth, the heart and passion in making music that his strength is always poignant, sweet, charming. In short, there are all the ingredients to fly, high and away from the crowds of a sleek jazz made in Italy, and instead give a wonderful lesson in good, indeed, great jazz.

___jazz review _usa "No tenemos que pedir permiso para ser libres
" indeed no and this slogan fit perfectly in the music composed by Danilo Gallo. Contrabassist, composer and arranger, living in Venice, Italy, Danilo also runs his own record label, “El Gallo Rojo Records” with his cohort, Zeno De Rossi. I have heard strange names for record labels but this one surprisingly marries names, attitudes and composition with an amazing knack. Danilo Gallo has a solid classical foundation, but also a great endowment for testing the free waters. From innovation, creativity and appealing compositions up until the art work of this release, Danilo Gallo disengages tons of lyricism and fun. “Kabu-L” broaches with a bass/sax/drums gloomy introduction leading the chasm to a melodic high skilled trombone player, Gerhard Gschlössl, all of that bringing freedom of expression to every voice. “El Gallo Sanchez” allows the entering of “woods and ore” in a soft ballade, yet filled with great inventiveness and a well balanced drum section. “Lullaby of Rattlesnakes” and “Mysticisme Nucléaire” prove the extraordinary abilities of Gallo to compose and de-compose. Daniele D’Agaro’s flamboyancy on the tenor is awe-inspiring. “Bugsy Siegel” and “Udine” are also Gallo’s compositions, both conceding great context to Zeno De Rossi’s drums, Gherard Gschloessl’s trombone and Achille Succi’s clarinet. Succi provides a leisurely scenery, ideal for vagrant preoccupation... Verona saw Shakespearian beings born in his roots three centuries ago and nowadays hidden genius. The thing is that not only is Verona the nest of talents, but it is all Italy encrypted with virtuosity in Todo Chueco's release. This album is more than a gift and in a sense the title visualizes the way you will stand after listening to this creation, in a good meaning, as a ”gallo chueco!”

Bravi e coraggiosi. Perché sperimentano, perché mescolano i linguaggi e improvvisano davvero freely. All things music, jazz, have a great need, always. Danilo Gallo is a young bass player, was born in Foggia in 1972, but already has a very active performing and teaching. He has worked with a truly impressive list of names. The experience is also felt in the advance maturity of its language. It 's a curious musician, who has on several instruments and also in very different contexts. The disc is strong, as it could be said of a dish with an intense flavor. This is from the rhythms: closer to rock and folk that at some jazz rooted traditions, all expertly mixed with more free time, linked to an aesthetic free. But on this tissue rhythmic flies especially remarkable improvisations on trombone (in the hands of Gerhard Gschloessl) and bass clarinet. The latter, played by Achille Succi, has some very precious moments, scattered throughout the work. In Kabu-l, for example, the opening track, written by Danilo Gallo, there is a remarkable solo Succi, which is placed in a loaf of Italian musicians who practice this instrument with the results of absolute value. (The usual name for all: Gianluigi Trovesi). But back to the album: Todo Chueca and varied even when the compositions do not come from the pen of Gallo, and range from a tribute to Tom Waits (Alice) to a new interpretation of Satie, which begins softly to explode Cheap after a furious start rocking. The disc closes with a rather delicate and thoughtful tribute to the city of Udine, where the only re-emphasizes the trombone and bass clarinet, while Gallo built behind them a melancholy and "shady" accompaniment.

Hatched by the family of El Gallo Rojo, new independent label, created to give free rein to those trapped by that jazz music heads Italian stale, the Gallo & The Roosters have a hard character from modern times assembled with catchy, singable and "danceable" and more explicitly free periods, without ever falling into the monotonous and predictable. Kabu-rocking character of the load of a groove that moves the body, is followed by Bugsy Siegel un'orientaleggiante with a trombone and a bass clarinet that are set to take the theme and improvisations, the Latinized El Gallo Sanchez capable of bring in the sky that the sun shade to be addressed sultry shots of naps. Here and in the album are good to work a handful of other musicians at all alien to the line style of the quartet. An album that can easily turn over the borders of Italy. Finally I wanted to point out the relevance of the entire graphic design, well maintained and capable of being able to express contemporary music. For all lovers of the digital files, however, I suggest a ride to the website of El Gallo Rojo and inside you will find a list of abum published to date with the ballot and almost all of the titles you have available a couple of tracks to download (legally). Surely you will have the opportunity to hear something new and why not, also, interesting.

Open-mindedness is not granted for the Italian scene and still a daily reality in countries like the United States, where the preparation of the musicians on several musical styles is perfectly normal. That's how to find Todo Chueca place pieces by authors as diverse as Eric Satie (the two "froides Pieces") and Tom Waits ("Alice"), while the rest is the work of the pen of the leader and bassist Danilo Gallo. The basic quartet is completed by Achille Succi, mostly on bass clarinet and also on alto sax, a sturdy Gerhard Gschloessl Zeno De Rossi on trombone and drums. Worth mentioning are also other contributors here and there for various compositions make the album and played slide: Terragnoli Henry on guitar, the Fender Rhodes Giorgio Pagorig, Daniel D `Agaro on tenor sax, UT Gandhi on drums, Nicola Fazzini and Piero Bon Bittolo the alto sax in "Mysticism Nucléaire," an explosive such as track title door. The group is led with a firm hand by Danilo Gallo, in line with the most modern tendencies of a colleague who said Dave Holland. Use well the front line with two instruments that are rarely heard together, such as the trombone and bass clarinet. His is a multifaceted talent, able to combine different narrative storylines and make them consistent. It plays nell'orientaleggiante "Bugsy Siegel" to realize, in which sticks to the pace of the two horns in counterpoint to improvise a melody evocative of distant lands, preventing the escape route from the route specified. In the rhythmic pulse developed with Zeno De Rossi show a rich musical articulation and an expressive participation of all respect.

Bassist & leader, Danilo Gallo, wrote six of the nine tunes here with two Erik Satie covers and one by Tom Waits. Danilo's feisty contrabass is often at the center of most of these songs. On "Kabu-l". the quartet moves back and forth between free and written sections effortlessly, the bass clarinet and trombone sounding great together. It is really the great, ever-creative and flexible playing by the contrabass and drums that sounds superb throughout. Satie's "Pieces Froides No. 1" is done with suspense-filled charm, spacious and enchanting. "El Gallo Sanchez" features some slide guitar and is sounds like a theme for a goofy western flick. On each piece, Danilo has written some memorable theme that will stay with you, rather folky and quaint, yet not particularly sounding like their from anywhere specific in Europe. Hatology & Nimbus recording artist, Daniele D'agaro plays a great twisted solo on "Lullaby of Rattlesnakes". The Tom Waits cover is the title piece from "Alice" and again it features some delightful slide guitar, muted trombone and that great drunken-sort of vibe that Tom Waits so much embodies. It never ceases to amaze me when music this good comes from relative unknowns from another country. Then again, it seems to happen almost very other week here at DMG.
